Bring Solar Power to Auraria!
YES, I would ask that the Board of the Auraria Higher
Education Center (AHEC) enter into a proposed arrangement with Xcel Energy and
3 Phases Energy Services to install a 750 kW solar energy array atop four
buildings here on campus. In asking the Board to enter into this arrangement I
understand that:
- By
entering into this agreement the Board would be investing in clean energy
generation and would be supporting the reduction of greenhouse gas
emissions in Colorado.
- According
to Xcel, the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from this 750 kW solar
project is the equivalent of planting 37,500 trees, and would offset
approximately 4% of campus energy use.
- The
rate at which Auraria purchases the solar power will be determined by the
Auraria Facilities management office, but will probably be slightly higher
than the cost of conventional energy (ie coal and natural gas).
- Therefore,
while initial annual energy costs will be higher, AHEC will benefit by
saving money over the course of the 20-year project. As electricity costs rise, AHEC will
save money.
