Who We Are
Russell Garcia -
Russell, 25, is a senior at CU Denver majoring in biology and chemistry. He
is an active member
of CoPIRG on campus. Russell just got engaged but he and his fiancé are holding
off on the wedding until they are more financially secure. He drops off his
parents' health care this December and he anticipates he won’t be covered until
he gets into graduate school. He is nervous about the school's insurance because of
the "horror stories" he has heard but he will probably take it anyway. russell@copirgstudents.org
Katie Tate - Katie, 21,
is a junior at CU Denver studying communications and is also involved with
CoPIRG there. She loves hanging out with friends, running and
hiking. She is also a nanny. She was injured working part time at a plant
nursery. For care, she had to use the
workmen's compensation program which was "a total nightmare." Upon graduation, she hopes to get a job with
decent health insurance but she is skeptical given the struggles her recently
graduated friends have. One day she will
run her own business and will make good choices for health coverage on its
behalf. katie@copirgstudents.org
Heather
Maurer - Heather is a 2008 graduate from the University of
Denver. She is the program fellow and state coordinator for CoPIRG. Currently on
behalf of CoPIRG she is running a campaign to bring better transportation to the
state, but is spending some time with Katie and Russell to help the Colorado
Health Care Alert campaign succeed. She lives in her native town of Denver. As a
victim of the profit motives of the health care industry, she became passionate
at an early age about the need to provide every citizen with adequate health
care. heather@copirg.org
